Tour description
This is Iceland far off the beaten path - into the remote and untouched Westfjords, a region many Icelanders call their favorite part of the country and one most visitors never reach. The Westfjords were named Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel” destination in 2022, and once you arrive, you’ll understand why.
WHY I THINK YOU WILL LOVE THIS TOUR! 🧡
As an Icelander who’s traveled all around the country for 30 years, the remote Westfjords is my favorite region in Iceland. It genuinely feels like driving into another world. Small coastal towns, dramatic fjords and fewer tourists than almost anywhere else in Iceland.
My personal highlights are Dynjandi waterfall, the jaw-dropping Látrabjarg cliffs (it really does feel like the edge of the world), and the constant wow-factor of driving in and out of fjords with huge mountain views in every direction. In summer you have a real chance of seeing puffins, seals, and even Arctic foxes. I’ve even seen whales swimming below the fjord roads.
If you’re visiting Iceland in summer and want the country at its most wild, quiet, and unforgettable, this is the tour I’d recommend every time.
This tour is an absolute MUST do. The WestFjords are absolutely stunning. We had the wonderful Nicola for our tour guide, she was kind, patient, full of energy and positivity. She always did her best to accommodate all requests and we had some extra stops and we even spotted whales in the fjords three different times which we had extra stops to watch for them also! Thank you Nicola for an unforgettable tour ❤️. The stops are plentiful and all unique and beautiful. Hotels used were excellent in some stunning locations! Just book it!!
One of the best travel experiences in my life. There is no better way to experience the grandeur and sheer wonder of the untamed Westfjords. I had the greatest pleasure to take the tour with David, whose adventurous and nature-loving soul made the perfect expert guide for a tour like this. The tour was well paced, rich in stimulating and extraordinary activities and sights, and with plenty of opportunities to do my own little exploration in the evenings too. There is literally no better way to experience the Westfjords, I’m sure I’ll be back!
I’m so happy I decided to include the Westfjords into my first trip to Iceland. When researching for my trip, I kept hearing people mention how they either wish they had been able to go, or budgeted more time for them. The Westfjords are GORGEOUS and very different from the scenery of the Golden Circle and South Coast. Note there is a significant amount of driving involved. I would highly recommend this tour for first timers.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why book a guided Westfjords tour instead of self-driving?Because our local driver-guide takes you to the very best Westfjords highlights and hidden gems - the kind of spots many travelers miss when planning on their own - and times the route so you get the right stops in the right order. The Westfjords are spectacular but remote, with long distances, winding roads, limited accommodation and fast-changing weather. On this tour, hotels, breakfast, entry fees and all logistics are handled for you, so you can simply show up and experience the Westfjords at their best.
- What’s the best time to visit the Westfjords? This tour runs in summer (June–September), which is the best season for road access, weather, long daylight hours and the highest chance of wildlife sightings, including seasonal puffins.
- What’s included in the price?Three full days with a professional English-speaking local driver-guide, comfortable small-group transport, free Reykjavik pick-up and drop-off, two nights in private en-suite rooms, breakfast both mornings, entry fees (Eiríksstaðir and Arctic Fox Center), plus free WiFi and USB charging onboard. All major logistics are arranged from start to finish.
- Is the Westfjords worth visiting in Iceland?Absolutely. The Westfjords are Iceland’s most remote and least-visited region, known for dramatic fjords, wildlife, red sand beaches and iconic waterfalls like Dynjandi. If you want Iceland beyond the crowds, this is the place.
- How much driving is there each day?Expect approximately 200–300 km per day and around 4–5 hours of scenic driving daily. The day is comfortably broken up with stops every 45–120 minutes for viewpoints, short walks and restroom breaks, so it never feels like nonstop driving. Guests who want more activity can use some stops for longer walks, while others can keep it relaxed.
- Is this tour suitable for older travelers?Yes. This tour is planned for comfort and a relaxed pace, with scenic driving broken up by regular stops and plenty of time at key sights. It works well for older travelers, and it’s also great for active guests - if you want extra movement, you’ll have chances to walk more, take longer photo stops, or explore a bit further at certain locations.
- Do I need to be very fit? Are there hikes? No special fitness is required. There are a few short, optional walks and gentle hikes to waterfalls and viewpoints. Active travelers can often add extra walking or explore nearby areas at stops, while anyone who prefers a calmer pace will always have comfortable options to rest, take photos, or enjoy the scenery.
- What kind of accommodation is included? You’ll stay two nights in carefully selected Westfjords hotels: one peaceful countryside hotel and one hotel in Ísafjörður. Rooms are private with en-suite bathrooms, breakfast is included, and WiFi is available at the hotels.
- What meals are included, and where do we eat?Breakfast is included both mornings at your hotels. Lunch and dinner are not included, but your guide schedules stops at local restaurants and cafés each day, with recommendations. You’ll have time to eat at your own pace and choose what suits you.
- Will we definitely see puffins, seals, Arctic foxes or whales?Wildlife is never guaranteed, but the Westfjords are one of Iceland’s best regions for wildlife viewing. Puffins are seasonal (summer) at Látrabjarg, seals are often seen at Hvítanes, Arctic foxes are featured at the Arctic Fox Center (and sometimes spotted in the wild). While we can't guarantee, all of the above are very likely to see. And whales are occasionally seen in the fjords.
- What are pick-up and drop-off details in Reykjavik?Pick-up is in Reykjavik between 08:30–09:00 (direct hotel pickup when possible, otherwise nearby designated bus stops). Drop-off may differ slightly from pickup point, with an approximate 30-minute drop-off window and estimated return around 20:30 on Day 3 (weather dependent).
- What if the weather is bad? Can the itinerary change? The tour operates in all weather conditions, but the itinerary may be adjusted for safety and to make the most of the day. In severe weather warnings, the tour may be modified or cancelled. Bolafjall is weather dependent and may be skipped in high winds.
- What should I pack for a summer Westfjords tour?Bring warm layers, a windproof and waterproof jacket, sturdy waterproof shoes (walking shoes or hiking shoes), and comfortable outdoor clothing. Avoid jeans in wet conditions. Pack light with a small carry-on suitcase (max 22 inches/cabin size). Active guests may also want an extra base layer and gloves for windy viewpoints.
