Tour description
Are you ready to head deep into the Icelandic Highlands, the part of the country most visitors never get to see?
Why I think you'll love this tour! 🧡
I'll be honest, there are plenty of day tours from Reykjavik, but Landmannalaugar is the one I keep telling friends to save for when they want to see the real Iceland. This isn't the version of the country you've already seen on a hundred postcards. It's wilder, more remote, and genuinely a little surreal, mountains in colours you didn't know rock could be, black obsidian glittering underfoot, and steam drifting up from the ground like the place is quietly alive.
What makes it special for me is the mix. You get the thrill of bouncing into the highlands in a proper Super Jeep, a hike with views that stop you mid-sentence, and then, when your legs have had enough, you sink into a natural hot spring in the middle of all that wildness. Not many tours give you adventure and a soak in the same day. Add a small group and a local guide who actually loves this place, and it just becomes one of those days you find yourself talking about long after you've flown home.
If you've only got one big adventure day in you this summer, this is the one I'd pick!
Highly recommend this trip for both single travelers, families and couples. Small bus with very informative and enthusiastic guide, sharing great knowledge about Iceland throughout the tour. Stunning scenic drive through rough landscape and amazing hike, that was adjustable according to physical abilities and desires. 5/5!
We drove up into the highlands past Hekla (great view of the volcano) and parked in Landmannalauger. We hiked about 5 miles - circular route through the lava and obsidian to get wonderful views of the rhyolite mountains. Some chose to hike further up the mountains, I headed back to the hot springs. There is a wooden wall with hooks for your belongings and steps into the river. Steam was coming up because it was so hot but it is easy to move closer to or farther from the spring to find the best temperature. We enjoyed the sun and springs for an hour. There is a bathroom block there and a small shop. Afterwords our guide kindly took us to a large crater (not on the itinerary) followed by Valley of tears and one other waterfall. A very memorable experience!
